What is cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency (often referred to simply as “Crypto”) is a type of digital asset that operates independently of traditional banks and governments. While many investors view crypto as an opportunity for long-term growth, prices can change quickly, making it important to understand both the opportunities and the risks before investing.

Is cryptocurrency insured?

No. Cryptocurrency investments are not federally insured by the NCUA or FDIC, are not deposits or obligations of COPFCU, are not guaranteed by the credit union, and may lose value.

Can anyone invest?

COPFCU account holders over the age of 18 and in good standing can buy, sell, or hold assets. Commercial accounts and trust accounts are not supported. Account holders residing in TX, ID, or NY are unable to trade.

Which cryptocurrencies are available?

You can currently buy and sell:

Can cryptocurrency lose value?

Yes, just like any investment product, cryptocurrency can lose or gain value over time. Cryptocurrencies are volatile and unpredictable, meaning that their prices can increase or decrease quickly and without warning.

Many factors affect a cryptocurrency’s value, including supply and demand, regulation, hacking, competition, innovation and market sentiment. You should only invest in cryptocurrencies if you are aware of the risks and are willing to accept the potential losses.

Is cryptocurrency taxable?

Yes, cryptocurrency is subject to taxation, just like any other investment asset. COPFCU cannot provide tax advice, so we recommend consulting a qualified tax professional regarding your situation.

Are there any trading fees?

Yes. There is a $0.99 minimum fee per trade, with a fee range of 1.00% – 2.99% per trade depending on the dollar amount of the transaction. You will be shown the amount of the trading fee before you confirm the trade.

Can I send or receive cryptocurrency from another wallet?

No. At this time, you can only buy and sell digital currency within the platform. External transfers (sending funds to or receiving funds from another wallet) are not availabile.

Can COPFCU provide investment advice?

No. COPFCU employees cannot recommend specific cryptocurrencies or provide investment advice. We encourage members to carefully research investments and consider consulting a qualified financial professional before investing.

What is the relationship between COPFCU and InvestiFi?

COPFCU has partnered with InvestiFi to integrate its digital investing platform into digital banking (online banking and mobile apps). This allows you to access InvestiFi’s learning and investing tools directly from within your banking interface and to invest directly from your checking account without having to transfer money to a third-party app.
