Tax Refund Checks

Cincinnati Police Federal Credit Union is required to follow federal credit union laws and regulations regarding the handling and processing of checks, including tax refund checks. Please note that in accordance with these laws and regulations, our policies are as follows:

  • Third-Party Checks are Not Accepted

  • You May Be Required to Present Valid Identification

  • U.S. Treasury Checks for $5,000 or More May Be Held* -- Any check (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks) for $5,000 or more will be deposited with the appropriate hold placed. U.S. Treasury checks for $1,000 or less may be deposited with no hold. For checks between $1,000-$5,000 a hold may or may not be placed depending on available balance, length of membership and account activity.

  • Checks from Tax Preparation Companies Will Be Held -- Checks from H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, etc. are not considered to be federally-issued funds. As a result, these checks will be deposited with the appropriate hold placed.

  • Funds Must Be Available in Your Account to Cash a Check Over $1,000 -- To cash a check (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks) for more than $1,000, the funds must be available in your account.

  • Checks Must Be Endorsed by All Payees -- Checks made payable to you and your spouse must be endorsed on the back by both payees. The credit union cannot accept a check that is not properly endorsed.

  • Checks Made Payable to Individuals Who Are Not on the Account -- When a check (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks) is made payable to both you and your spouse, but only one of you is on the account, the payee who is not on the account must come in to the credit union and present a valid Drivers License, Passport or other government-issued photo ID.

  • Negative Account Balances or Delinquent Loans -- Any check deposited (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks) will be applied to any negative account balance or delinquent loan before funds may be withdrawn.

  • *COPFCU Reserves the Right to Place a Hold or Extend a Hold on Checks -- If COPFCU has reason to suspect fraud or suspicious activity in relation to a check (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks), a hold may be placed on the check and/or extended for a longer period of time.

  • *COPFCU Reserves the Right to Refuse Acceptance of a Check -- If COPFCU has reason to suspect fraud or suspicious activity in relation to a check (including U.S. Treasury tax refund checks), COPFCU may refuse to accept the check.
